Backing Films With A Unique Voice

It used to be that Hollywood would take some chances on mid-level budget films, seeing if they would capture an audience. However, those days seem to be over and most of what comes out of Hollywood is structured to fit formulas for properties, ESG scores and merchandising options. 
There are still creative writers, producers and filmmakers out there, so how are they finding the backing to develop projects independently, despite the major studio's resistance to unique ideas?
